The responses and questions of the participants widely acknowledge the added value and high quality of the research presented. Throughout the conference, the discussion on key engineering skills was a recurrent theme. As a consequence, more research in this field is clearly needed. To be continued...

The PREFER session at the SEFI 2018 Conference in Copenhagen was very popular. Over 50 engineering education professionals participated in our session and critically evaluated the output of the PREFER project. In the introductory speech, Greet Langie (KU Leuven) provided a general outline of the PREFER project objectives and a scope of the four different papers. Next, Sofie Craps (KU Leuven) gave a solid presentation on the methodology and outcomes of the different industry expert panels (matching the roles with the key competences) that were organized in Belgium, The Netherlands and Ireland. Thereafter, Maarten Pinxten (KU Leuven) presented the results of a survey on the self-perceived skills levels of 591 first-year students of KU Leuven and TU Delft. In his lecture, Darren Carthy (DIT) pointed at the pitfalls in terms of skills definition and measurement when comparing research papers on the importance of engineering skills. Finally, Mariana Leandro Cruz (TU Delft) displayed the results of the TU Delft pilot of the Chinese whisper communication exercise, showing that these types of exercises are very successful in explaining the importance of communication to engineering students.
