On Tuesday 27th of November, business and academic partners of the PREFER consortium were interviewed by HR Magazine at the KU Leuven Campus Carolus in Antwerp.
Gerdien Scharten (Siemens Nederland), Rudy Goossens (Engie), Elies Hendrickx (BDO), Greet Langie (KU Leuven), Sofie Craps (KU Leuven) and Maarten Pinxten (KU Leuven) participated in a round-table discussion organised by HR Magazine. HR Magazine is the leading network partner in the HR field in Belgium and an important outlet for HR professionals.
During the round-table talk, different perspectives on the employability of young engineering graduates were discussed. From a business perspective, Rudy (Engie) highlighted the importance of realistic job expectations of engineering graduates when entering their first position. Additionally, Gerdien (Siemens Netherlands) indicated that a simple display of technical skills is insufficient during the recruitment process of young engineers. A proven track record of professional skills is indispensable for the modern day labor marktet. The Professional Roles Framework developed at KU Leuven provides an answers to both needs. First, engineering students are triggered to reflect on their engineering identity and, hence, manage their expectations in this resepct. Second, mapping students' professional competences in function of their preferred professional role will stimulate them to go beyond their technical training. Elies (BDO) explains how the Situational Judgement Test that is currently developed contributes to this goal.
