Darren Carthy, the PhD researcher from the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT), is currently working closely with Michael Tack and Elies Hendrickx from BDO to develop a psychometric test based on the competences collected from the expert panels. The test aims to position an individual within the professional roles model and provide tailored feedback to individuals about their motivations and areas of strength, along with identifying areas where an individual could improve. More specifically, the test will consist of two parts: a motivational questionnaire and competence test.
The motivational test intends to gauge students’ preferred personal style regarding a number of real-life situations. Students will need to express their preferred choice from three options (reflecting the three professional roles). The main objective is to introduce the model, raise awareness on the variety of engineering roles, and let students reflect on their personal preference in a low key way.
The focus of the competence test will be explicitly on the key competences defined in the expert panels. At the moment, Situational Judgement Tests (SJT’s) are developed in order to measure student’s preferred course of action when confronted with a realistic engineering situation. The objective of this competence test is to let students gain insight in (1) which competences they are good at and (2) how these competences are linked to the three professional roles.
DIT have set out a 4 stage evaluation plan for the test which will begin as early as September when test items have been developed and reviewed by the members of the PREFER project. Validation pilots will be organized with different cohorts of students at KU Leuven and DIT. Additionally, HR professionals from the companies in the consortium will be involved in validating the SJT’s.
